Antique Combination 2/4 Min Model K Reproducer for Edison Phonograph
The reproducer was just rebuild by the best in the field - Steve Medved.
Here is the note that got from Steve about this reproducer:
"
The Edison Model K is the most difficult reproducer to properly restore. The link length must be correct so the stylus bar and the weight does not hit the record. This reproducer has a reproduction diaphragm, I made the link with a jig that I have. The reproduction model K diaphragms only 1 or 2 in ten are good, and I chose a good one. The Model K comes in two types, shoulders that move and shoulders that do not move. When the wax amberol records came out they were very brittle and wore easily, I believe Edison made the movable shoulders to help reduce the wear, but by 1910 it was clear that this did not help so the reproducer went to shoulders that did not move. Shoulders are what holds the stylus bar in place. When you play the Model K you need to adjust the stylus bars so the playing bar is straight. You need to move the upper and the lower bar to achieve this.
I took this reproducer completely apart. I cleaned it with clock cleaner, polished it by hand with Flitz, neither are abrasive. The Model K weights are very thinly nickel plated, get out the Mother's Mag polish and you can easily remove the nickel plating. Fortunately, this weight was not abused to it is bright and shiny like Edison intended. The 2 and 4 minute styli are shaped like baseball bats, the knob rides in the groove. The 4 minute like a wagon wheel in a wagon wheel rut, the 2 minute the sapphire rod faces north and south like the grooves. Because the knob at the end of the stylus is polished all around you may rotate both styli, which I did. I use shellac like the Edison factory did.
This reproducer has both styli surfaces factory fresh where they contact the record. Lay on a bed with your head sticking out with only your neck to support your head. Not very comfortable, but dangers for the 4 minute stylus. I cannot tell you how many 4 minute styli I have seen like this with no support. Courtesy of the world famous Ron L you can actually see how a four minute stylus should look in the bar. That is what mine look like. The secret to a reproducer sounding good is freedom of movement, replacing gaskets alone does nothing. I have worked on may reproducers with new gaskets that sounded horrible, a Diamond A comes to mind. It had new gaskets, WOW!!! But the hinge block was frozen, the stylus bar very stiff, the tip of the diamond was broken off, and the diaphragm was badly warped, but it had new gaskets. It still sounded terrible until I corrected all the problems.
If you play between 500 and a thousand blue amberol records you can send the bar to me and I rotate the stylus for . That is the only maintenance the reproducer will need.
The Model K reproducer was made for convenience, you only needed one reproducer for 2 and 4 minute machines. The B to K share serial numbers. The H appeared around serial number A290,000 and the K around serial number A580,000. The first K weight is stamped Combination K and has the moveable shoulders. Very shortly after the Model K weight was stamped Combination Model K. Then came the non moving shoulders, unfortunately most of these have pot metal tops. Around 2.1 million Edison B to K reproducers were made from late 1901 to Dec 2014. From 1915 on only around 20,000 CHK reproducers were made. "
With minimal cosmetic wear the reproducer is in excellent+ working order in 2 min mode, and in 4 min mode.
