Caran d’Ache pays tribute to great Swiss Watchmaking
The Caran D'Ache 1010 represents a unique hybrid between Fine Watchmaking and Fine Writing.
T
en minutes past ten, the magic moment when the hands are in perfect balance, evokes the similarities between fine writing and fine watchmaking.
These two artistic crafts have deep roots in a Swiss culture that makes time a universe of eexcellence and precision an absolute standard.
To demonstrate this affinity, Caran d’Ache has created 1010, a limited edition model conceived as a tribute to magnificent timepieces with intricate complications.
1010 is intended for lovers of rare and exceptional objects, a very special writing instrument designed to capture life’s emotional moments: “Take the time to write and watch the ink flow with your thoughts”.
The complications of a watch movement reflected in a pen
The crafts and expertise of watchmaking and fine writing come together in this pen.
The CdA 1010 Limited Edition is part of the search for perfection that all craftsmen share: its elegant construction, its daring concept and its complex manufacturing make it both an artistic and a technical triumph.
A precious metaphor for time
The 1010 Limited Edition is a living link to a Swiss heritage, celebrating the special genius of watchmakers.
Its design draws on the roots of Swiss watchmaking, demonstrating expertise, creativity and mastery of technique. Inspired by watches with skeletonized case backs, it proudly reveals its interacting functions, sophisticated assemblies and perfect mechanics.
A complex mechanism with cogs and pinions: an outstanding achievement.
The body of the pen recalls the delicate gears of the finest timepieces.
The most noble materials have been used: gold, rhodium coated silver, and precious stones.
Features – 1010
The interior cage
The interior cage represents the complex mechanism of a watch movement.
It is crafted with great precision to fit perfectly inside the exterior cage.
The exterior cage
The design is inspired by the bridges that support a watch’s gear train.
To produce such a delicate motif and carry out cylindrical, rotary cutting without deformation, a highly complex program had to be perfected: the only one of its kind.
The balance wheel
The balance wheel is the key element that brings a watch to life.
Caran d’Ache craftsmen have positioned it at the tip of the body, perfectly poised between two rubies.
This very delicate element can been seen through a sapphire crystal dome that elegantly rounds off the body of this exceptional writing instrument.
The cap
The cap is inspired by wristwatch crowns.
It is made in rhodium-coated silver, polished by hand, with a clip that suggest a watch hand, attached to a pinion.
Meticulous attention has been given to every detail, both in the visible elements and the interior parts such as the piston pump which is set with a ruby as in a winding crown.
The CdA monogram adorning the top of the cap is, quite simply, a piece of pure jewellery.
The nib
The nib of the pen and the ink feed system have the required meticulous design and carefully guarded secrets.
Reflecting the intricacy of watchmaking mechanisms, the ink pump is set with ruby.
The pen’s nib is produced in 18k – 750 gold engraved with gear wheels and coated in rhodium.
It is polished, tested and prepared by hand to guarantee matchless writing comfort.
The packaging
This truly precious writing instrument is magnificently preserved in a wooden box lacquered to a piano finish.
It is accompanied by an ink bottle in raw glass decorated with gear wheels.
”Blue Night” ink adds a deep, refined touch to the most beautiful pages.
Full set configuration: wooden box (inner lining is quite worn), outer book, booklet, Certificate of Authenticity (#039/500), stamped papers (the pen was purchased at Kramer Krieg, Lausanne (CH) on November 2007, CdA polishing cloth.
The pen appears unused. Under magnification
there are minor
signs of handling light usage.
