THE COMPLETE
REPAIR SERVICE
FOR YOUR
EXPLORER TRACKBALL
THIS COMPLETE SERVICE HAS TWO FEATURES NOT
INCLUDED IN MY OTHER SERVICES
RESTORE THE FINISH ON THE BALL AT NO ADDED COST
Restoring the surface of the ball (normally an added fee) is included at no extra cost.
I have developed a process to restore the surface of the Explorer ball.
The ball will look much better and will turn more easily on the new ceramic bearings.
If the ball is visibly scratched or dull, this process will remove all except the deepest scratches.
Even if the ball is not visibly scratched, restoring the surface improves the ease of turning the ball.
ALL PARTS PRICES DISCOUNTED
All parts are discounted by 10 percent as part of this Complete refurbishment service.
I have a good inventory of Microsoft Explorer parts - including new Microsoft USB cables.
This enables me to offer the most complete and professional service.
JUST REPLACING THE BEARINGS IS NO LONGER SUFFICIENT
Use and age have changed your Explorer trackball.
The scroll wheel most likely spins too easily.
The five internal switches will be less responsive now.
The underside of the left side buttons is probably worn.
If the bearings are worn, the ball may also be worn and scratched.
Even the plastic case and red socket may have changed shape a little.
This affects how the buttons function and how easily the ball turns.
The buttons moldings on both models have become brittle and fragile.
Especially, the left side buttons on the early model (1 screw on bottom).
The scroll/left switches assembly on the later model is now easily damaged.
I have repaired and rebuilt about 3,000 Explorer trackballs
I provide Professional Quality service for your trackball.
Use these services with confidence
The price of this ‘service auction’ is specifically
to repair and refurbish the Explorer trackball of the two models described below.
The early model Explorer (model 1) has one screw showing on the bottom.
The later model Explorer (model 2) has two screws showing on the bottom.
When sending a question about your Explorer, please tell which model it is.
Zirconia Oxide Ceramic

·
Polish the red socket and the upper case (see note about upper case)
·
Restore the surface of the ball and polish the ball
Install a scroll wheel ‘spring’ to improve scroll wheel detent action
·
Shim the buttons as needed to adjust for wear and to improve operation
·
Properly reassemble the trackball and
retest all functions
CUSTOM BEARING INSTALLATION
I custom set the ceramic bearings for each particular trackball and ball.
This is the better method, as each ball is slightly different in size.
The balls were made by more than one billiard ball company for Microsoft.
Further, the balls do wear with use and become slightly smaller.
Also, the size and shape of each red socket will have changed with age and use.
Each of the three bearings is set by hand and then adjusted for the optimum
operation of that particular ball in that particular Explorer trackball.
This is one of the ways that ten years experience in working with trackballs
permits me to offer the best possible Explorer refurbishment service.
NOTE: About Parts Costs
The ceramic bearings, the scroll spring and shims are included at no extra cost.
The cost of other part will be discounted by 10 percent.
Please see the parts listing below.
TYPICAL PARTS PRICES – (before the discount)
The new USB cables I install are better than the original and less likely to fail.
All other parts I use are taken from Microsoft Explorer trackballs.
The prices shown below reflect the cost and difficulty in obtaining used Explorers.
It is 'catch 22'. The more I repair, the fewer non-working ones are available.
New bearings – included in the auction price - no added cost
New USB cable (or Tested Good cable for )
Left buttons molding (now seldom available - please see note below)
Right buttons molding
Base molding
Upper case molding varies by condition to
Scroll wheel
Scroll/left switches assembly: Later model and early model
(please see note below)
Optical circuit board
Red socket assembly w LED’s
Main control board
Red Ball - Usually none available
If any parts are needed that were not requested by the buyer, I will notify
The buyer before the work is completed to determine if the buyer is in agreement.
If I am unable to repair the trackball due to lack of a particular part - this almost never happens
I will return the trackball and refund the purchase price of the service.
NOTE ABOUT LEFT SIDE BUTTONS MOLDING
The left side buttons molding on both models is now easily broken and chipped.
As the trackball has aged, the dark gray plastic has become more brittle and fragile.
I have no spares but can repair or rebuild yours if you have all the pieces.
If the upper button is chipped, I will smooth the chipped area at no cost.
If it is broken (and you still have all the pieces), I can rebuild the molding.
This is a tedious and ‘tricky’ process.
There will be an additional fee of to do this work.
NOTE ABOUT SCROLL/SWITCHES ASSEMBLIES
Almost none of the parts in the two models are interchangeable.
This is especially true for the scroll/left switches assembly.
The early model assembly almost never breaks. So, I have plenty of spares at a lower price.
The later model assembly breaks easily (and frequently). So, I seldom have a spare and the price is higher.
I have learned how to repair/rebuild the assembly if all the pieces are in the trackball.
This is another tedious and ‘tricky’ task. I charge an extra fee of for this task.
NOTE ABOUT THE UPPER CASE
The upper case or housing is made of a off-white plastic with a silver coating and a clear coat.
With use and age, the two coats are at first stained.
This stain is ‘permanent’ and is not removed with the cleaning and polishing.
With more use, the two coats are worn through, exposing some of the off-white plastic.
In short, your trackball will be returned cleaned and polished, but looking much the same as it did.
WARRANTY
I provide a written 60-day warranty for labor and parts plus a one-year warranty for the bearings.
Please see the warranty image at the top of this page
.
NOTE ABOUT REPLACEMENT BALLS AND OTHER PARTS
MY ONLY SOURCE FOR MOST PARTS IS USED EXPLORER TRACKBALLS
THEY ARE NOW MORE COSTLY AND DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN
SORRY, BUT I HAVE NO PARTS TO SELL SEPARATELY
I HAVE A LIMITED SUPPLY THAT I NEED TO HOLD ON TO
IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE REPAIR AND REFURBISHMENT SERVICES
SHIPPING
The shipping cost you pay when you purchase this service,
covers the cost of returning your trackball via insured USPS Priority Mail.
After you purchase the repair service for the Explorer trackball,
I will send you the mailing address and suggestions for packaging.
The best way is via USPS Priority Mail using a number 4 free box.
It is 7 x 7 x 6 and can be mailed anywhere in the US for about .
If your post office does not have number 4 boxes, you can use their free ‘shoebox’.
Never ship the trackball in an envelope!
Also, it is risky to ship your Explorer in the retail package.
Microsoft made a huge mistake in the retail packaging causing
many of the Explorers to be damaged during shipping.
The mass of the ball caused the red plastic around the bearings to be fractured.
SHIPPING TIME IS NOT 30 DAYS!
THE TIME REQUIRED TO RETURN YOUR TRACKBALL WILL BE MUCH LESS
I STATE THE 30 DAYS SINCE SOME OWNERS DO NOT SEND THEIR TRACKBALL QUICKLY.
ONE PERSON WAITED OVER A YEAR!
IF THERE ARE NO SPECIAL ISSUES WITH A TRACKBALL,
I USUALLY SHIP IT BACK WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF RECEIVING IT.
IF IT IS GOING TO TAKE LONGER, I NOTIFY THE OWNER.
RETURN SHIPPING
The shipping fee you pay for this auction covers the cost of sending the trackball back to you
There are no handling or packaging charges.
USPS Priority Mail is used for the speed and quality of service.
Postage rates have increased considerably.
I try to charge enough to cover most of the cost and generally lose a bit on the average.
