Description
I will try to make better photos soon if I can. The flash makes the ships name hard to read.During World War I, the ship remained in port in Hamburg. After the war, it was briefly commissioned into the United States Navy as
USS
Imperator
(ID-4080)
and employed as a transport, returning American troops from Europe. Following its service with the U.S. Navy,
Imperator
was handed over to Britain's Cunard Line as part of war reparations where it sailed as the flagship
RMS
Berengaria
for the final decade of its career.
SS
Imperator
was an ocean liner built for the Hamburg America Line (Hamburg Amerikanische Paketfahrt Aktien Gesellschaft, or HAPAG), launched in 1912. Although in Europe, with the exception of Italy and France, all ships are usually referred to as feminine, during the Liner’s Hamburg American Line career the ship was to be referred to as masculine at the special request of Kaiser Wilhelm II. At the time of his completion in June 1913, he was the largest passenger ship in the world by gross tonnage, surpassing the new White Star giants,
Olympic
and
Titanic
.
Imperator
was the first of a trio of successively larger Hamburg American liners that included S.S.
Vaterland
(Later the United States Liner
Leviathan
) and S.S.
Bismarck
(Purchased and renamed
Majestic
for the White Star Line transatlantic passenger service).
The plastic stand is not included. I just use it to hold it for the photos.
